Banville bags the Booker

So, John Banville wins the Booker for his "poignant and dark novel about childhood memories", The Sea. Well deserved and long overdue for JB.

He and I traipsed round Ireland together in early 1977 during the promo of Doctor Copernicus.

What with the loony and plummeting criteria of prizes these days, I feared for a few heart-stopping moments that the judges would lose sight of all standards and guidelines and plump for some nonsense in the Stephen King mould.

As always, Grumpy Book Man worth reading.
