gatemouth brown

R.I.P. Clarence Brown

The astonishingly versatile Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown is dead at 81, after evacuating to Texas from his home in Slidell, Louisiana.

He never liked being pigeon-holed as a bluesman, but the fact remained he played the blues better than most people.

I saw him several times in Hong Kong, and once the next morning shopping in Causeway Bay, stopping the traffic in his usual colorful cowboy gear.

He swore by T-Bone Walker as the father of the blues and could be pretty rude about some big name icons in the field, dismissing them as mere copycats.

For anyone interested, there are some good DVDs out there on the man, including an appearance in Lightning in a Bottle.
