Acronym Watch
While delighted that Kitsap County commissioners raised all of $28 from fining the use of acronyms during meetings, I'm a little disturbed they even needed to query whether "DC" qualified.
As I was taught,
An acronym is a word formed from the initial letters of the words of a compound term - NATO, radar, or snafu.A *word*, OK?.
Of course, with falling standards all around, look up any dictionary and you'll be allowed "also : an abbreviation (as FBI) formed from initial letters".
Fine. Let's just any kill any inconvenient distinction and lump everything under abbrev.
But before that, here's one of my favorite acronyms - the South African township of Soweto.
It sounds black and African as hell, but is in fact apartheid-bound as they come.
An acronym derived from South-Western Townships.
