Farewell Lorenzo's

Blimey - Lorenzo's caff forced to close? After all these years? Bloody landlords.

Almost my entire early work life was spent there. Just remembering sends shivers:

• First cuppa after being hired by Muller
• Gawd knows how many snatched lunches hunched over the Evening Standard
• Rendezvous for Malcolm Oram to offer me the Cassell job
• The only place for assignations
• Best place to call the whole thing off - L very reliable on coming over with another cuppa before the tears gushed
• Perfect recovery room after heavy sessions up in Muriel's
• And so forth ... real piece of history

And, of course, where I went to tune up before gigs down The Cousins or hearing the likes of the incomparable Bert (still not enjoying the sales and fame he deserves, but definitely sliding comfily into rôle of eminence grise)
