A Way with Words

Phrases from Shakespeare

Superb Spring 2005 edition of BIAHC's Arts News just out - lose no time getting your own, and sign up while you're about it.

The right-hand column of page 9 features a fascinating and informative list of familiar words with which one would win bar-room bets off those who'd never guess they were from Shakespeare.

I pride myself on being steeped in the Bard but here are some that jolted even me awake:

    As You Like It
  • Seen better days
  • Too much of a good thing
    Richard III
  • A tower of strength
    The Merry Wives of Windsor
  • What the dickens (what? that wasn't coined for Charles?)
  • As luck would have it
    Henry IV, Part II
  • Eaten me out of house and home
    Taming of the Shrew
  • Budge an inch
    Macbeth
  • One fell swoop
    Othello
  • Foregone conclusion (such a modern phrase!)
    Cymbeline
  • Haven't slept a wink
    The Tempest
  • Into thin air
